IBE Kikuo, the father of G-SHOCK, tells the story:

MR-G: THE BIRTH OF A NEW LEGACY

Quiet beginnings

The story of MR-G began quietly, fueled by a passion for watchmaking. After the phenomenal success of G-SHOCK, its creator, Kikuo Ibe, was ready for a new challenge. Although G-SHOCK was already famous for its unbreakable design, Ibe and his team envisioned something even bolder: a watch that combined G-SHOCK's legendary toughness with the finest craftsmanship Japan could offer.

The project began in secrecy, with a dedicated team of eight engineers working after hours. They handled everything from planning and design to quality control, bringing Ibe's bold vision to life. The result was a watch that blends durability and sophistication, a piece fit for any occasion.

SHOCK & AWE

As always, the MR-G team drew inspiration from an unexpected source: car bumpers. Since bumpers are separate from the vehicle's main structure to absorb impact, the team designed a watch with a separate bezel—the part most susceptible to shock. But, a sturdy case isn't enough if the glass shatters, so they added a unique airtight cushion between the bezel and the glass.

This concept seemed far-fetched in the 1980s. Applying car bumper technology to a metal watch was unconventional, and metal processing engineers were hesitant to take on the challenge.

Yet Kikuo Ibe and his team moved forward undeterred. They formed a small group of committed engineers, willing to prototype and test this unique design. The testing process was gruelling and took years. To meet G-SHOCK's rigorous durability standards, they dropped a single case over 6,000 times to gather data and refine the shock-absorbing technology. In the end, they proved the design could withstand anything and earned its place in the G-SHOCK legacy.

THE BIRTH OF MR-G

In 1996, G-SHOCK introduced the MRG-100, the first metal version of its iconic watch. This marked a significant shift from the traditional black resin G-SHOCKs. Crafted from solid steel and commanding a premium price, the MRG-100 signaled a new era with its refined materials and intricate craftsmanship, redefining the legacy of G-SHOCK.

The impact was immediate. Global watch collectors and G-SHOCK enthusiasts sought to invest in a timepiece that combined the luxury of Japanese watchmaking with G-SHOCK's legendary durability. The demand for this unique collection has only grown in the decades since, proving the enduring appeal of this bold new direction.

DAT55G: Titanium, Only Tougher

DAT55G retains all the qualities of titanium that have made it a mainstay in the aerospace, chemical, and medicine industries: lightness, strength, corrosion resistance, and non-magnetism. But, this high-performance, Japanese-developed titanium alloy is three-times tougher.

GRADE 5 TITANIUM: Lightweight, Strong And Polished To Perfection

Featuring on the MR-G’s case, case back, and buttons, Grade 5 Titanium combines the lightness you’d expect from a JIS Class 2 titanium with greater strength and scratch-resistance than pure titanium. The final touch is Sallaz polishing, applied by skilled artisans for an exquisite finish.

Sallaz polishing prepares surfaces for a beautifully smooth, distortion-free surface

Dense, uniform hairline pattern for a beautiful, smooth finish. The rasp marks that create the delicate hairline finish are created by pressing the case against a sheet of spinning sandpaper. As with Sallaz polishing, the craftsperson carefully applies precise and uniform rasp marks, relying on an eye and feel developed over years of experience.

Case Components

MR-G timepieces are comprised of hundreds of separate components that operate in harmony together to achieve not only a luxurious premium finish but world leading shock resistance and durability. Working with challenging materials such as the cobalt-chrome COBARION which is four times harder than pure titanium, MR-G engineers meticulously develop precision components that allow the artisanal craftwork to shine through. The MRG-B5000, for example, has 25 individual components in the bezel alone, while the MRG-BF1000 Frogman has over 70 exterior components for an airtight, diver-certified finish.

Engraving

The MR-G - SHOUGEKI-MARU incorporates the metalwork of KOBAYASHI Masao. The bezel is engraved with the maedate crest of the Shougeki-Maru: Gai, featuring a striking tiger design. The unique rock-grain relief pattern was achieved using specialized chisels of various sizes, perfectly capturing the tiger's distinctive stripes.

The Details

The new MRG-2100 features a dial design inspired by the traditional kigumi concept in Japanese woodwork. This design incorporates elements of wooden joinery, creating a base surface with a unique corrugated form and geometric patterns that form a sophisticated lattice effect. The intricate openings in the dial do more than enhance the design—they also let in light for solar power generation, allowing for a deep metallic black finish.
